UNONews: James E. Payne Named Provost

President Fos has announced that James E. Payne will succeed Louis V. Paradise as provost and vice president for academic affairs of the University of New Orleans. Payne’s appointment will begin January 1, 2013. "Payne has established himself as an outstanding scholar and administrator,” said Fos of the candidate, who was selected from a pool of 75 applicants. “I am looking forward to working with him at the University of New Orleans.”

Payne most recently served as regional vice chancellor for academic affairs and research at the polytechnic campus of the University of South Florida System. Payne, who holds a Ph.D. in economics, has more than two decades of experience as a faculty member and administrator.

Investiture is Cause for Celebration

The University of New Orleans Week of Excellence drew to a close with a grand finale on Monday, November 12, as students, faculty, and staff celebrated the formal investiture of UNO President Peter J. Fos. The event, held in the University Center at the Lakefront Campus, was followed by a gala which surpassed fundraising expectations. Proceeds go toward the UNO EdVet campaign to recruit and support military veterans with scholarships and special programs.

The formal event, carried out under the name, "Setting a Course for the Future," officially installed Fos, who is a UNO graduate and New Orleans native, as the University's sixth leader and first president. The event included opening and closing performances by the UNO Wind Ensemble, a procession of faculty dressed in robes of their alma maters, the carrying of the University mace by Senate Faculty President Dinah M. Payne and an invocation led by Father Paul Desrosiers, chaplin of the University of New Orleans Newman Center.

Alumni Professionals Help Students Succeed

As the fall semester draws to a close, we're proud to reflect on the wonderful events that have brought University of New Orleans alumni and current students together to foster professional development and a deeper connection to the university we all share. Throughout October, the Alumni Association's Student Success Committee, in partnership with the College of Sciences and University Success, piloted a new retention program which sent graduates of the College of Sciences back to the classroom, this time as "Alumni Role Models". The volunteers shared their UNO stories, career paths and advice with Sciences freshmen.  Alumni from all disciplines Dined like Professionals with graduating seniors at the Association's 3rd etiquette and professional networking luncheon on November 15.  And recognizing the important role of positive reinforcement in long term success, the Office of Alumni Affairs was proud to celebrate our future alumni by hosting the 12 Semi-Annual Official Ring Ceremony to remember on November 19.
