Heartbeat of the Crescent City: UNO on TV

A television commercial calling UNO, “The Heartbeat of the Crescent City,” will have a 13-week run on WWL-TV as part of a fall advertising campaign appearing on billboards, in local movie theaters, on cable channels, online, and in various print publications. The 30-second spot, designed to attract new students and increase student and alumni pride, features key University programs including jazz studies, film production, naval architecture and marine engineering. If the narrator sounds familiar, that’s because it’s Ninth Ward native and Emmy and Tony award winning actor John Larroquette. Click the image to the left to watch the video or Read more...

AlumNotes: Dr. Charlie Hassenboehler & Megan Whitmarsh

University of New Orleans alumni Dr. Charlie Hassenboehler (BS 64) and Megan Whitmarsh (MFA 97) let their creativity fly in radically different ways.

Hassenboehler, who describes himself as a phyzzilist (a physicist who fizzled), is a textile scientist with several patents under his belt who has just invented an iPhone app called Real Pool Shotmaker. He began playing pool at the John T. O'Connor Senior Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, and, frustrated by the lack of definitive advice on how to improve his game, applied a liberal dose of the physics he picked up in part as an undergraduate at UNO. His app can be purchased for Apple devices here. Read the full article here.

Whitmarsh, an artist and designer living in Los Angeles, has partnered with prominent lifestyle brand Paul Frank to produce a limited-edition collection of apparrel, accessories and print work called Julius in Yeti City. Set to debut in the Spring of 2013, the collaboration will place the brand's beloved mascot, a grinning monkey named Julius, into Whitmarsh's fantasy world, Yeti City, to "encounter colorful landscapes, Keytars, and friendly mythical creatures." Nims Theatre through Saturday, September 15 at 7:30 PM nightly with a special matinee performance on Sunday, September 16 at 2:30 PM. Reserve your tickets by calling 280-SHOW (7469). According to Wendy Schluchter, professor and chair of the biological sciences department, "There are current and anticipated employment opportunities in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, biology education, resources conservation and management, all areas of growth in Louisiana.” Read More...
