UNO, NPR Partner on Launch of Digital Newsroom

The University of New Orleans and WWNO in partnership with NPR have announced plans to launch a new non-profit digital newsroom aimed at creating in-depth, open source and independent news coverage about the New Orleans region.  The initiative called NewOrleansReporter.org has received strong support from business and civic groups concerned about the impact of the Times-Picayune's plans to reduce print to just three days a week. Big Tuition Savings for Kids of Out-of-State Alums!

Already one of the “25 Most Affordable Colleges,” according to Newsweek’s 2012 college rankings, UNO can now offer children of out-of-state alumni a deal that's really too good to refuse: if admitted, they are eligible to receive a waiver that covers 100% of the out-of-state fee.

And the Award for Best Director Goes to...

Less than one month after her graduation, new alumna Catherine “Kd” Amond (MFA 2012) has already collected the Best Director award at last month's 2012 International Television Festival (ITVFEST) for her short film, The Woodshed.  The film, which was also nominated for Best Drama, Best Screenwriting and Best Actor, was Amond's thesis project at UNO and included 16 UNO students and alumni.  Two other film competitions this fall provide more opportunity for Amond and her film to gain recognition. UNO and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to Partner on $1.2 Million Gulf Shellfish Study

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the University of New Orleans have agreed to partner on a five-year, $1.2 million study of crab and shrimp populations in the northern Gulf of Mexico.  The 5 year study will track the abundance and distribution of the shellfish to better understand how they respond to and recover from disasters like Hurricane Katrina, freshwater from the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway and the BP oil spill. Alumnus Tops Country and iTunes All-Genre Charts

New Orleans native and Nashville songwriter Jim McCormick is having a great month. One of his songs topped the country music charts, while another was released by country rock star Jason Aldean as a single and quickly raced to the top of iTunes all-genre singles chart. McCormick, a nationally recognized singer and songwriter, received a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from the University of New Orleans and matriculated from UNO's first Creative Writing Workshop, where he says he honed many of the skills that helped him to get where he is today.  Read More…
