Onward and Upward: UNO Receives $5M Grant

The University of New Orleans has been awarded grants totaling $5 million over a five-year period by the Upward Bound program through the U. S. Department of Education. Upward Bound assists institutions of higher education and other organizations in operating projects that support eligible high school students in preparing for college entrance. The program serves students from low-income families and those in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree.

The grants will fund three projects at UNO: Project PASS, Jefferson Upward Bound and Classic Upward Bound. Working together, the chapters will help over 200 students in the Greater New Orleans area in the first year alone, more than doubling the program’s current reach.

Project PASS, or Postsecondary Achievement for Special Students, encourages Upward Bound’s traditional demographic of low-income and potential first generation college students, as well as students with disabilities, to enter and complete a postsecondary education. The target high schools are Eleanor McMain Secondary School and McDonogh 35 College Preparatory High School. Jefferson Upward Bound targets East Jefferson and Riverdale high schools while the Classic Upward Bound program will serve eligible students attending Joseph S. Clark Preparatory High School, KIPP Renaissance High School, Lake Area New Tech Early College High School and Sarah T. Reed High School.

All Upward Bound projects are required to provide instruction in math, laboratory science, composition, literature and foreign language. Students also receive guidance and assistance with secondary school reentry, alternative education programs, college financial aid programs, entrance exams and applications for admission. In addition, students enrolled in Project PASS  for at least two years before graduation are entitled to participate in UNO’s Bridge Program which pays for their enrollment in six hours of course work at the university during the summer following high school.
