New Athletic Director Makes Privateer Pride a Priority

Derek Morel has high hopes. "It is important to build a foundation for the future while embracing the traditions and storied history of UNO Athletics,” he says. “Our past successes can serve as a beacon of hope and motivation for our coaches and student-athletes." The May 18th appointment of Morel, a New Orleans native and sports marketing executive, to the position of Director of Intercollegiate Athletics promises to deliver on this aspiration.

Morel brings to UNO more than 17 years of high-level sales, negotiation, marketing and fundraising experience. He most recently served as vice-president and general manager of Wake Forest IMG Sports Marketing of IMG College and has held leadership roles at the University of Georgia and Tulane. Morel is expected to increase the number of corporate sponsorships and involvement of former student-athletes at UNO, building ties between the University and the greater community.  "There is a strong passion for UNO Athletics in and around the city of New Orleans,” said Morel. “It is our collective mission to nurture that passion and unify our supporters behind a common vision.”

“Derek brings not only athletic administrative skills and experiences, but he brings a vast background in fundraising and working with corporate sponsors at multiple levels,” said University of New Orleans President Dr. Peter Fos. “I am confident that with Derek leading the athletic department that UNO will again achieve success as a Division I member institution. My goal is that UNO will be a premier university in everything it does, including athletics.”

Morel is eager to take up the challenge, beginning with gaining conference membership for UNO and helping to bring the institution’s athletic department into compliance with NCAA Division I membership. "It is truly a privilege to join the University of New Orleans and President Fos' leadership team,” says Morel. “President Fos and his team of bright, innovative administrators are building a foundation for long-term growth and success at UNO.  I am eager to work in close collaboration with the university community to revitalize UNO Athletics, re-energize our students, alumni and fans and foster Privateer Pride in anyone willing to join our team."
