Charles Tubre:  An Advocate and a Gentleman

The Advocacy Center’s new Riverbend offices have been named in honor of UNO alum Charles H. Tubre (BA Sociology 79). The Center protects the rights of people with mental and physical disabilities, and Tubre has spent his life working for the benefit of individuals with disabilities. At the age of 14, a spinal cord injury left him paralyzed. At the building’s dedication ceremony he spoke of the love of his parents, who encouraged him to lead the remarkable life he has come to fulfill. He has lived it providing the same kind of support he received from his family - and during his time at the University of New Orleans - to others in the community.

Tubre left home in quiet Oakdale, Louisiana because UNO was able to provided housing first at Delgado and then by opening its own wheelchair-accessible dorm. "UNO was huge for him," says lifelong friend and former classmate Carla Seyler. "It meant so much to him to be in the city and have the opportunity for mobility and freedom that UNO offered." After graduation, Tubre took on projects with the Vieux Carre Commission to formulate templates for wheelchair accessibility on French Quarter sidewalks and standards for accessible entrances on streetcars and taxicabs. He was involved in ensuring access to both the Aquarium of the Americas and the New Orleans Museum of Art’s Sculpture Garden and is currently active through his work with the Advocacy Center in helping individuals acquire Section 8 housing vouchers, allowing them to live independently even with a limited income.
