UNONews: Shipbuilding Success

The University of New Orleans has achieved a milestone in titanium shipbuilding research at its National Center for Advanced Manufacturing located at the NASA Michoud Facility in New Orleans East. Financed by a three-year $4.8 million grant from the Office of Naval Research, UNO engineers are making advancements on a technique called friction stir welding. The longest of the welds is over 16 feet, more than double the previous record.

According to Rob Moore, a technical consultant for Textron, which manufactures aircraft, vessels and vehicles and has yards in Slidell and New Orleans, "Reduced maintenance costs and longer service life of a titanium hull result in a net reduction in total ownership costs." UNO's research, then, has the potential to change shipbuilding for the better. To read the full article on nola.com, click HERE.

AlumNotes: Hey Soul Sister

New Orleans is the kind of city where Melissa Weber (BA, COLA '00) and her alter-ego, DJ Soul Sister, can exist in harmony. Even before graduating from UNO with a degree in drama and communications (and a minor in English), Weber was on her way to establishing herself as both a communications professional and a renowned DJ-Artist.

“Soul Sister life began for me at WWOZ,” she explains. “I’ve done my Soul Power radio show for close to 20 years.” Weber had intentions of helping out at a college radio station, willing to “lick envelopes and stuff” just to be near the music, and ended up with her own show. “When people at [WWOZ] got hip to the fact that I collected records and was into all this music, they were like, ‘Why don’t you get on the air?’” For the full story, click HERE.

Brews & Blue Angels: Volunteer with UNO!

Who knew giving back could be so much fun? On March 28th, UNO alumni volunteers sold tickets and cans of Abita beer to attendees of YLC Wednesday at the Square, all while taking in the music of Big Sam’s Funky Nation + The Wise Guys and promoting the University of New Orleans.

Next up? Volunteer for a 3.5 hour shift on April 21 or 22 and see the Blue Angels Air Shows over Lake Ponchartrain up-close. Help set up or sell beverages right in the heart of the Airshow's main spectator viewing area.  You'll see and hear everything while helping support your alma mater.  And we'll provide t-shirts and parking!  Click HERE for more information and email alumni@uno.edu to sign up.

Southern Rep's Streetcar Stars UNO

Southern Rep celebrates its 25th anniversary this year with a "startlingly fresh" production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Originally scheduled for the company's cancelled Post-Katrina season, the Tennessee Williams classic finally makes a triumphant return to New Orleans. The play is a veritable who's who of UNO alumni. Our grads earned leading roles, with Michael Santos starring as Stanley Kowalski, Ashley Ricord as Stella Kowalski and Michael Harkins as Harold Mitchell. The cast also includes alumni Tracy Collins and James Yeargain as well as professor of film, theatre and communication arts Phil Karnell. Premiering during last month's Tennessee Williams New Orleans Literary Festival, performances continue through April 15th. For more information, the full cast and to buy tickets, click HERE.
