UNO Alumnus Joe RussoJoe Russo, Executive Producer, Arclight Productions

Joe Russo (MA Film, Theatre, Communications 96) has been putting his UNO film degree to good use for over two decades. Most recently, the native Louisianan has been an Executive Producer at the award-winning Arclight Productions in Los Angeles since 2012.

His latest documentary, COUNTRY: PORTRAITS OF AN AMERICAN SOUND, currently screening at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles, weaves iconic imagery, historical footage and interviews with musicians, historians and photographers together to present a dynamic look at the role of country music and photography in capturing and communicating this uniquely American sound. The film features music and songs by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift, Hank Williams and more.

Russo began his film career in New Orleans in the early 90’s, relocating to “the other” LA after earning his Masters degree. In 2006, he co-founded the production company Element Media where he oversaw EPK (Electronic Press Kits) and documentary production, as well as producing his own projects, until joining Arclight in 2012.

Russo’s next project with Arclight recently brought him back to Louisiana. The yet-to-be-named production focuses on resilience and adapting/rethinking in the architecture and design of our communities in the time of rising seas, and brought his team to several areas affected by natural disasters including New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward, the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New York City areas hit by Superstorm Sandy.  The film will follow four photographers who have documented these events as well as examples of adaptive architecture and urban design.  It will also feature experts on climate change, architecture and urban design.

  • COUNTRY: PORTRAITS OF AN AMERICAN SOUND is screening as part of an exhibit of the same name at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles where it is being presented in association with the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History from May 31- September 28, 2014.
  • Russo's new documentary will premiere in Los Angeles at the Annenberg Space for Photography at the end of the year.
